The thing is, and so randomly, we have an Elsa Shiapparelli 1950′s hat that is the most Perfect Match for this dress. So perfect, on fact, it is hard to believe they did not arrive together!

]]>The femininity of apparel from the 1940’s and 1960’s has stolen our fashionista hearts. Silhouettes like the long and lean, the hourglass and the wasp-waist dresses separates the guys from the dolls. The 1960’s brought dramatic fashion changes that mirrored social shifts. Current fashions are derived from these era’s, and you can create this look for yourself with authentic vintage garments!
The key to making these fashions perform for you are the appropriate makeup and hairstyles, the right accessories, and lots of chutzpah! Don’t be afraid to mix old with new. Flat glittery shoes or modern jewellery could be the right mix to update the look for today.
For a glam look going out on the town, think long, luscious eyelashes! The forties look is all about red lipstick, a creamy complexion, rouged cheeks, smoky eyes, and pencilled, pronounced eyebrows. 40’s hair was big soft waves, very sexy, feminine, a controlled yet “loose” look. Long and shoulder length hair was in, as well as some shorter looks, always wavy and confident. For evening wear, the dress was prom-like, lacy and dramatic, with a tight bodice, sleeveless, a natural waist and floor length. Also in style was the long and lean dress, often cut on the bias, creating an elegant flow and hugging the body.
The 50’s style tightened up, more curls, shorter styles. The “victory rolll” became popular, as it is today for the vintage fashionista! The red lipstick was still the ticket, but pink was gaining popularity for the lips. Pronounced, pencilled eyebrows made the 1950s’ look dramatic for evening! Floor length, uber elegant dresses were the choices of the best dressed, with perfectly coifed hairstyles and classic, rhinestone jewelry.
The 1960’s, hair lengthened for some, but the statement was the cute and boyish pixie cut! Dresses became more casual and much, much shorter. Eyes were still very big, but the lipstick became more subtle, the styles softer. There was a fashion revolution, whereby clothing started to become less gender specific. No more waspy waist, colourful shifts burst on the fashion scene! None the less, a new kind of feminine classic styling was evolving!

]]>This is more of a personal message than usual, so I hope you can bear with. As the crew and I were painting and redecorating Georgie Girl recently, I stopped for a moment to amaze at where I was one short year ago and all that has happened since.
One year ago, I was crocheting hats and scarves, making tutu’s, felting Christmas ornaments and sewing! I was just trying so hard to place any stock in my store that might appeal at Christmas to local gift givers, and I was on a very, very tight budget. Some local jewelery artists and craftspeople were at side cheering me on and that gave me strength and hope. My baby section was full of cute little gifts, and that was a blessing.
Christmas shoppers gave me some retail love, and that carried me through to the new year. I knew there was a change a-coming, but I can save that story for a later blog!
The move to Ellis Street had taken it’s toll on me and my baby business. Ellis 3 years ago was not quite “on the retail map” in a big way and it was hit and miss – mostly miss. Although I did, out of sheer desperation, consider moving again, I did hunch that Ellis Street from the Madison to Clement would “get there”. So, I shook change out of the kitty when I needed to, tightened the belt as much as possible and met each day with some hope and innovation. Many of my loyal customers supported the shop enough to make my days a bit easier – Biggest Hugs to you, you know who you are!
Fast forward to today. As I look back and step mentally into those stilettos I was wearing that one short year ago, OMG! The sheer delight of owning, operating and growing a fabulous, amazing, business in women’s vintage fashion is like a seriously realistic DREAM! Don’t pinch me, if this is a dream I love it! The best part is…drum roll…ladies, you seem to like it!! THANK YOU!!
I am excited about the Georgie Girl Vintage concept, and will relate in another blog someday how the idea was my customers, and how I needed to be led there kicking and screaming! I think sometime of that old worn out adage “can’t see the forest for the trees” might apply here!
